Rio Grande Turkey

The Rio Grande wild Turkey is the most widespread of the 3 subspecies of wild Turkey native to Texas, including the Merriam and Eastern subspecies. The gobbling of wild turkey signals the beginning of spring in late March and April in Texas. Mature gobblers will weigh 17 – 21 lbs, sporting 8–12” beards with feathers of iridescent brown, copper and black with vivid blue and red heads. Hens are drab brown, will weigh 8 -11 lbs & occasionally will sport short beards. Rio Grande gobblers put on quite a show in the spring, strutting and gobbling during the courtship of the hens. If you have never seen a gobbler displaying & strutting, it is a show you need to see!
