Blackbuck Antelope
Blackbuck are small herd oriented antelope, weighing 60 – 80 lbs on the hoof, indigenous to the grassy pains and lightly forested areas of India and eastern Pakistan. Males are black with white undersides sporting spiral horns of up to 4 turns. Females are reddish yellow with white undersides and do not have horns. Blackbuck Antelope are one of the big success stories of breeding an endangered species in their native habitat back to a safe population level. Introduced on Texas game farms 50+ years ago, they have done very well and the prolific Texas herds have been used to restock areas of India where numbers have plummeted. These shy & cautious little antelope are interesting when they are alarmed as they will jump several feet in the air when they start to run.
