Axis Deer
(Spotted Deer – Chital)
Axis Deer are one of the most beautiful of the deer (Ungulate) family, sporting a golden-brown body with white spotted overlay, a black strip running down it’s back and with a predominant white throat patch. Males will weigh 130 – 160 lbs on the hoof sporting large 3 tined horns, often in excess of 30”, and is known as making the best table fare of any of the deer family. Unlike Whitetails that are in hard antler from September thru March, you will see Axis bucks in hard antler or velvet year round. Females are smaller weighing upwards to 90 lbs and not sporting antlers. Unlike Whitetails, Axis Deer can both graze and browse, giving them a decided advantage in surviving adverse conditions over other deer. Introduced into Texas in 1932 from the savannas & brushy plains of India, there are an estimated 150,000 Axis in Texas & are much sought after.
